His Royal Majesty Osuman Lumor Jeroboam Yah Nii Armah Blackwell, widely recognized by trade as Yahu Blackwell, is a striking embodiment of heritage, resilience, and commitment to community.

The journey of the Blackwell family began during a dark chapter in history when they were forcibly sold from Christiansborg Castle (now known as Osu Castle) in Accra, Ghana. Transferred to England’s Lord Joseph Blackwell, the royal family was relocated to Northumberland County, Virginia, where they became part of the Anchorage Plantation, known as Walnut Lodge.

This transition marked the start of a long struggle for autonomy and recognition. A particularly significant figure in this lineage is HRM Royston Austin “Nii Armah” Blackwell, Yahu's great-great-grandfather. Born into slavery in 1833, Royston’s life transformed dramatically on May 15, 1864, during a daring raid by the Union Army led by Republican Brigadier General H. Judson Kilpatrick. This moment not only allowed Royston to break free from the chains of slavery, but it also forged an enduring connection between the GaDangme American community and the Republican Party, emphasizing the historical significance of political affiliations in the fight for freedom.

Upon obtaining his freedom, Royston strategically relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, where he adopted the name Royston “Austin” to evade the possibility of recapture. His service in the Revenue Cutter Service during the tumultuous Civil War era positioned him as both a participant and a witness to a critical phase in American history. His legacy as a freedman laid the groundwork for generations to come, shaping the identity and aspirations of his descendants.

Today, HRM Yahu Blackwell honors this heritage through his multifaceted roles as a professional boxer, business owner, and community activist. Owning the renowned "Rita's Italian Ice" and "Auntie Anne's Pretzels" franchises in Baltimore, Yahu's entrepreneurial spirit reflects his commitment to uplifting his community. Moreover, his energy drink brand, "HEWALE," signifies innovation and local pride, encapsulating the essence of resilience and aspiration. HRM Yahu's personal journey has not been without its challenges. The tragic loss of his mother in 2015 due to medical malpractice deeply impacted him. It was a moment that solidified his resolve to honor her memory by becoming the man she and his father raised him to be. This dedication to his family, combined with his business ventures and activism, highlights a profound connection to his roots and a passion for making a difference.

As HRM Yahu Blackwell continues to navigate his path as a royal descendant and community leader, his story stands as a testament to the unbreakable spirit of those who have come before him. Through his efforts, he not only preserves a rich lineage but also tirelessly works to inspire and uplift the broader community in Baltimore, ensuring that the legacy of resilience and strength lives on for future generations.
